Baked Apples – Pommes Au Four

dsc_2313.JPG

What’s for dessert? I have to admit I am not a master in desserts making – there are still lots for me to learn. Baked apples is one of the easiest French desserts that I have learnt and could think of to win over time. Baked apples is a typical dessert from Normandy. You may know that Normandy region in France is famous for apples, cheeses, ciders, dairy products.. not forget for its famous seafood too!

To make baked apples, it’s important to have good quality of apples. The sweetness of the apples brings out this dish that you could ever imagine. I like to serve my baked apples slightly chilled. However, baked apples are usually served at room temperature. Raisins that I put to make baked apples are optional. The original baked apples are cooked without raisins added.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

Cooking apples, 4
Granulated sugar, 4 tbsp

Cinnamon powder, 1 tbsp
Raisins, 4 tsp
Water, 5 tbsp

Method:
1. Remove the core of each apple.
2. Wash the apples and use a fork to lightly poke around them.
3. Then put them in a baking dish.
4. Pour in 5 tbsp of water in the baking dish. Lightly sprinkle the water on the apples while pouring.
5. Stuff each apple with 1 tsp of raisins.
6. Sprinkle sugar then cinnamon on each apple.
7. Shove the baking dish into a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees celcius for about 30 minutes (depending on the size of apples, if they are equally small, then about 20 minutes).

Tip: To know whether it’s cooked – the skin should look brown and the flesh should be soft and can be easily scooped with a teaspoon.

Enjoy!

That apple looks exquisite. I made baked apples once, but they were for a winter applesauce. They were delicious though!

Mentioned your Pommes au Four recipe in October 21 is Apple Day, Pommes au Four Maybe? on ‘Serge the Concierge’.

I took the liberty to borrow one of your pictures as an illustration.
